I have often thought that the argument from desire was worth more than is usually thought.

But I suppose the best argument against it is the argument from 'supernormal stimuli'.

Just as the oystercatcher looks for an egg larger than any oystercatcher egg so do we look for a love and a beauty greater and more trustworthy than any actual love or beauty. Natural selection has never found a way to select against that longing for extremes.
