Why can't I steel? From debate.org

Morals are based off something

Who are we to say steeling is bad. Isn't it just a means to survive. Like evolution is just saying we are here to survive. Morals have to come from a greater power who understands everything and sees everything to make a fair statement steeling is wrong. Not just wrong it is a sin. Without religion there is nothing to back us up. When a child ask why cant i steel. You cant just say because i said so. The Child needs to see why you said so.

OK, this person needs to take my daughter's English class.

If you are raised in a religious home, even if you stop believing, you are still affected by the upbringing, so it would be unreasonable to expect you to just abandon morality. Your emotions have been trained to be moral. C. S. Lewis writes:

Without the aid of trained emotions the intellect is powerless against the animal organism. I had rather play cards against a man who was quite sceptical about ethics, but bred to believe that "a gentleman does not cheat," than against an irreproachable moral theologian who had been brought up among card sharpers.

On the other hand, does this leave you with an answer to the child's question?

Stealing tends to break cooperation. Cooperation provides far greater benefits over the long run than stealing. There are exceptions, of course. Sometimes when you steal you don't get caught at all. But generally speaking, stealing is not worth the risk.

Atheists are correct when they say a good motivator for being "moral" is the social and personal wellbeing such behavior brings. They also lose any privileges of declaring certain behaviors "evil", as in "objectively wrong in a moral sense". All they have is personal preference, which no one is obligated to respect.

Instead of saying "personal preference," you could say "one's own best interest." Of course no one is "obligated" to act in their own best interest. In fact, people often don't know how to act in their own best interest. But people usually try to act in their own best interest. That's what morality is - acting in your own (longterm) best interest.

A Christian opposes gay marriage, and an atheist slams him for it. It could be argued that keeping society legally aligned with the Christian's religious views is in his own best interests, as it is a form of empowerment.

So, is the atheist wrong in condemning him, assuming neither is homosexual and thus it does not directly impact either party? Or is the Christian immoral for opposing gay marriage?

temper yourself and alloy your character to be changed so that you won't yield to steeling.

Nice one SteveK. One does not want to malleable when it comes to this.

I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brethren, my kinsmen by race. (Romans 9:2-3)

So.. is Paul acting immorally by preferring his own personal damnation to Israel's continuing disbelief?

Tell that to the Dorians, the (classical) Greeks, the Macedonians, the Romans, the Huns, the Vandals, the Arabs, the Magyars, the Vikings, the Mongols, the Turks ...

First of all, it is 'steal', not 'steel'. Steel is a metal while steal is the act of taking something that doesn't belong to you.

A Christian opposes gay marriage,

Muslims also oppose gay marriage. Why not make this a Muslim nation? They are opposed to many of the same things as Christians.

I generally steel myself against comments such as the one above.

he doesn't believe Islamic religion. He believes gay marriage is wrong because he thinks that is mandates by his faith which is not Islam.

I see that some of us did not read what I read about taking an English class. But set that aside and look at the fundamental question.

society is coasting on Christian memories.

Tell that to the Dorians... No point. They are surely in Hell and will have figured out for themselves that it wasn't worth the risk.

You could answer as most parents do, that if nobody felt an obligation not to steal our lives would be wretched, spending our time defending ourselves against theft rather than in productive work. Of course, getting the obligation to be felt requires the emotional training.
