In my opinion, it's not so much God that gives our lives meaning, but personal immortality. If our conscious existence ends at our deaths, then our lives will have had no meaning the instant we die.

Religion is not in decline. The maze ways are shifting so patterns of religion are being reorganized. Conservatives always love to feel surrounded and out numbered and in danger.

I wonder what stereotypes of conservatives have to do with the article.

On topic, one absolutely can give oneself a purpose without God, but his actual value and meaning of his existence are no more substantial than the value of a piece of gravel.

You are right LL, the Clarice is not from a fun die point of view but a secularist pov. Those are the two groups that generally talk about religion in decline.

from the article:
"It used to be that religion gave life meaning. Even if life was hard drudgery, or worse, dangerous and painful, the hope of a better life in the age to come gave meaning and purpose even to the suffering.

But with religion in decline in first world countries, what gives lives meaning now? Some say nothing can. But most say we can, and have to, choose our own meaning and invest our lives in that."

A fundie would not have said that,

"it is death that gives meaning to life."

That sounds like bullshit. Perhaps death gives meaning to time and if this life is all you have then all you have is time to do something with your life (or waste it if you like).

I don't really know to what that refers but I have a feeling it might be an old cliche that one feels most alive at times when one's life is imn danger. An animal who is hunted feels more alive in those moments when in danger. I guess they asked endangered animals about that. That's a different kind of meaning anyway.
