What's wrong with this picture

The Old Testament is loaded with death penalty offenses, though Christ said the only ones who could carry a death sentence against one adulteress in particular were ones who were without sin. (They were executing ONE person after catching her in the very act of adultery. What's wrong with this picture?)

Do you think something is wrong with the picture?

Well, if the woman was caught in the very act of adultery, there are by definition two adulterers. Why is only the woman being punished?

It's the principal accuser (and principal evidence-giver) who must -- must, it's not optional! -- throw the first stone. And if accusers are deemed to have given false witness it is they who must be stoned.

That makes sense. Jesus apparently knew they were lying and so challenged them to throw the first stone. Their sin was bearing false witness, and they would also have become murderers if they actually threw a stone.
