OK, I can tell which side of the issue the reporter comes down on. And I can understand how people who don't think abortion is immoral or sinful think passing laws against it is outrageous.
Since all Western Christian nations had laws against abortion throughout history and very restrictive laws against abortion for about 100 years leading to the 60's we have historical knowledge that the entire Western Civilization was not a horrible place. Unless of course you wanted to break the law and kill someone.
And that of course is the gist of the question. Is abortion really killing someone or not? What the penalty for killing someone should be is a different discussion. Too bad the article did not address the one issue that the entire debate turns on.
Yes, of course it would, that is the only possible way it could look. It's not as though we lived in some magical world where different things could happen. I don't even need to read the article to know that the totally not-at-all biased NYT is warning us not to end up a hellhole-country like El Salvador! If killing a few (million) babies is all it takes, we should consider ourselves lucky!!
If one reads the link in my previous comment, although the title says Catholic, all branches of Christianity claim to hold the beliefs of the early Christians.
From the start, Christians saw abortion as a violation of the Lord's commandment to Love your neighbor.
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”
It's a shame to see Christians forget to love their neighbor. And it's a shame to not even hear a peep from those who want to change minds rather than laws on this thread.
Thanks, Mr. Miller, and thanks for the link to that paper. There was indeed wide agreement against abortion across all Christian denominations until the 1960s or so… around the time when Life magazine published amazing photographs of fetal development with a clarity that Aristotle never dreamed of. Of course, medical science had already had to acknowledge that the only reasonable biological claim was that human life begins at conception, as the Christian instinct had urged all along.
I would add that law itself has a role to play as teacher, but in turn it relies on people who understand the issue, not to mention its context in Church history. Still, there are some encouraging signs overall; ignorance is a huge obstacle, but it's not insurmountable.

Here is a history of how abortion was viewed by Christianity from the start. Maybe this will give some perspective to Christians of their moral heritage.

Coming up next: What if we let ordinary people vote on things? WOULD IT LOOK LIKE THIS?!?
Good you see you Mr Green. It's kind of lonely.
