What is deism?

Apparently, historically, it is not the view that God wound things up and left it alone. There is far more Christian content in the deism of people like Jefferson than most people recognize. It, for example, doesn't deny future rewards and punishments.

The deism found in England and the early American colonies has been retroactively classified by some scholars as theistic rationalism: a dogma-light amalgamation of liberal unitarian Christianity and Deism proper. Deism in its purest form tended to be more popular in France, and it was this strain of deism that rapidly shaded into atheism.
